A morning at the Witches' Market

Herbs, amulets, and woven color on Calle Linares — how to visit the Mercado de las Brujas like a local.

Witches' Market stall in La Paz filled with dried herbs, amulets, and ritual offerings

The Mercado de las Brujas — the Witches' Market — runs along Calle Linares and the streets around it, a ten-minute walk from Plaza San Francisco. Stalls sell everything from handwoven aguayos to dried herbs, amulets, and the small ceremonial offerings that Aymara tradition uses to honor Pachamama.

Go in the morning, when the light comes down the steep street and the stalls are setting up. The vendors are used to visitors and generous with explanations — ask what things are for, and you'll get stories rather than a sales pitch.

The surrounding lanes are the real textile shopping district: this is where to buy alpaca scarves, blankets, and knitwear at local prices rather than airport prices. A good rule of thumb: real alpaca feels cool and silky; acrylic blends feel warmer and staticky.

Pair the market with the San Francisco basilica next door, then walk fifteen minutes uphill and you're back in Sopocachi for lunch — this is the classic first-day loop we sketch for every guest.
